Värvide valik / Choosing colors

Värvide valik muutub kõige olulisemaks tikkimise juures, kuid samad värviõpetuse reeglid kehtivad ka mujal.

Choosing colors becomes the most important with embroidery, but the same rules apply also elsewhere.

Värviringi kasutatakse selleks, et mõista paremini värvide omavahelisi suhteid.
The color wheel is used to understand better the relationships between colors.

Värviringi on üksteisest võrdsele kaugusele paigutatud kolm primaarset ehk põhivärvid: punane , sinine ja kollane. Neid värve omavahel segades saame põhivärvuste vahel asuvad sekundaarvärvused: oranži, lilla ja rohelise (punane + kollane = oranž; kollane + sinine = roheline; punane + sinine = lilla).

In the color wheel there are placed at equal distances from one another the three primary or basic colors: red, blue and yellow. By mixing these colors we will get the secondary colors located between basic colors: orange, purple and green (red + yellow = orange; yellow + blue = green; red + blue = purple).

Põhi- ja sekundaarseid värve omavahel erinevates proportsioonides segades saame täieliku värvigamma.
If we mix primary and secondary colors together in different proportions, we will have complete set of colors.

Igal värvil on vastandvärvus (ka täiendvärvus, kontrasttoon) – värviringil asuvad nad teineteise vastas. Vastandvärvused annavad kõige suurema kontrasti ning neid kasutatakse üldtooni ergastamiseks. Vastandvärvuse efekt tuleb kõige paremini esile ning annab harmoonilise tulemuse, kui üks värvitoonidest on domineeriv.
Each color has the opposite color (the complementary color, contrastcolor) - these colors are located opposite each other in color wheel. The opposite colors give the contrast, and are used to make the overall tone bright. The effect of the oposite colors is the most distinctive and gives a harmonious result, when one of the colors will dominate.

Lähistoonid (ka analoogvärvused) asuvad värviringil üksteise kõrval, põhivärvuste vahel. Koos kasutades moodustavad lähistoonid harmoonilisi ja rahulikke tervikuid.
Analogue colors are located in the color wheel next to each other, between the primary colors. When used together the analogue colors will form harmonic and peaceful whole.

Värvid mõjutavad üksteist. Värvuste optiline mõju (simultaankontrast) – ühe värvitooni mõju teisele. Valgel taustal olevat värvust tajub hoopis teisiti, kui sama värvus mustal või mõnel teist tooni taustal.Valge taust muudab värvid erksamaks, must tuhmimaks.
Colors affect each other. The optical effect of the colors - how one of the colors effect to the other. The colors on a white background is sensed quite differently if the same colors on a black background, or on some other color. The white background makes the colors more vivid, black fades.

Choosing the colors the fabric and stitches used for work must be taken into account also. There are stitches which will cover the fabric, but also stitches, there the color of the fabric can be seen. The color of the fabric which is seen between the stitches will change the thread's color. The shadows of textured fabric or stitches can also change the thread's color.

Tikandit planeerides tuleks õigete värvide leidmiseks  laotada võimalikud värvid tikitavale kangale, et näeks kuidas taustavärv tikkimislõngade värve mõjutama hakkab ning kuidas on nende värvide omavaheline kooskõla. Tuleb arvestada, missugusel hulgal eri toone kasutatakse ning millised värvused on tikandis kõrvuti või lähestikku paigutatud. Kõrvuti asetsevad värvitoonid hakkavad üksteist mõjutama ega pruugi sobida, kuigi iga toon eraldi võetuna võib ju alusmaterjaliga sobida. Sel juhul tuleb leida teistsugune värvuse paigutus või kasutada nende kooskõlastamiseks mõnda uut tooni.
To find the right colors for embroidery is good to spread the possible threads on the fabric to see how the color of the background will affect the colors of the threads and how colors will match to each other. Also the proportion the different colors used in embroidery should be taken into account and what colors are placed close to each other. Some colors which will match with the color of the background may not match to each other.
